I don't think it would be that big a deal. Obama would probably be the most searched person in the database. People would search their elected officials and celebrities. People would most likely end up using it for more than just firearm sales.

I see your point. It will be interesting to see if truly anyone can use the system for any reason. There might be privacy issues that prevent this. Another thought is that anti-gun activists could crash the system by flooding it with calls.

That's the excuse that will most likely be used - even though strictly speaking there's no constitutionally defined right to privacy.

But, there are laws that define privacy.

The checks by the NCIS are public record already, so I don't see any privacy issues, and if the libs want to flood it, who cares?

It would be useless data since a search doesn't equal a sale. Anyone could use it at any time and there is no way for them to know which searches resulted in sales and which didn't.

Pretty easy to figure out which are likely sales... law enforcement already use utility bills as "probable cause"...

If I remember correctly...most of these heinous crimes were commited by someone who had ..NOT..been in previous trouble/problems...
How would it work for those situations?

It wouldn't, none of the proposals would. But what's wrong with more open records and less secrets? What's wrong with someone who does want a background check done before selling a gun being able to do so without having to take it to someone and pay a fee? It won't do diddly squat, but as long as they aren't forcing it on us, what does it hurt?

I'm only for something like this if it is voluntary. I oppose them forcing any background checks on any private sales because it won't do anything to criminals. Spree killers are one time killers who would never be caught by a background check and other criminals won't ever buy from a source that runs background checks if they buy at all.
