.............. someone who knows what they are doing .

Therein lies the problem.

IF you haven't used them before. Lots of questions may or may not get what you need.

IF you go on recommendations, may cover your work or maybe not.

Any trade is the same deal, just because they hang out a shingle, doesn't make them an expert.

I concur

Doing the job and just getting it done aren't the same.

My first ever dealing a "gunsmith", I had bought a mil-surp, scope and rings. Took to the so-called 'smith. Shop in garage behind his house, 1976.

I had supplied LOW rings, job needed MED rings.

The 'smith put rifle in mill and shaved down barrel to clear the scope. He too, claimed that was how he done most installs. I was NOT happy.
Did they ever tie his house fire back to you?

My first experience with a gunsmith was this dude named Gibson in North Tulsa. It was a really good experience, but then he got sick and retired. My second experience was with the dip-stick gunsmith at what was then my daily range, 2A. I had some target sights for a Beretta 96a1 and they were too wide for my sight pusher. I figured anyone with a mallet, nylon punch and workbench could do it. The turn around was probably too quick, because when I arrived the job was not good. The sight itself was chewed up from the gunsmith using a metal punch to push it. He had some serious whiffs as well which had damaged the finish in the safety selector and frame and even left a few divots. I wasn’t too concerned about the selector cause I have more of them, but he left some dings in that slide that are still there to this day. Those are bad things, indicative of a lazy gunsmith, but the most damning thing was that the GS hadn’t removed the safety selector before install so it was jammed up against the sight base. A gunsmith handed me a slide as finished that was not operational. No matter how much you want to defend this man’s work, do not overlook the fact that when I gave him the gun it was working, and when he gave it back to me it was not. I was apoplectic when I saw the state of my slide. I told him I wasn’t going to pay them. In the end Eric charged me half-price for the work, stating that “they had put the sights on the gun really quickly”, but I was not happy and told the gunsmith to his face that he sucks. That was my first and only lesson about “in-house” gunsmiths and I will never forget. They are **** and you should never use them.

First thing I have always done is make friends with my gunsmith and ask a lot of questions about work to be done. I also have different gunsmiths for different types of firearms. I have my ar and pistol gunsmith then I have a couple different gunsmiths for bolt rifles. I learned in the beginning to be weary and patient.

It’s nice that you are willing to accept some fault here but I think it is ridiculous for a smith to just get the FSB installed if there is a standard acceptable way to do the work with a jig. I have purchased lots of special tools to do the work correctly or I don’t take the job.

The Gunsmith at 2A is Garth Peterson.... because he's got my Baer. :D Unless they have someone else doing work there too.

I have always wondered if maybe he’s tooled up for 1911s, but not much else. I had a bad experience with him, but he must be doing something right to have stayed in business this long. What’s he doing with your gun just out of curiosity?
