this may not be the right place for this but.....

just wanted to see how many people understand or pay attention to the way that the local media reports on things with half truths, bias or outright lies. or maybe they are ignorant.

the other day there was a story about a teenager with a "submachinegun" in a parking lot that was ran off by a security guard. the teen dropped said gun and fled. the next day i heard a little blip on the news (don't remember which one) and they referred to it as "tec-9 submachinegun".

now i don't know if they are ignorant or don't know how to use google or wikipedia. but either one and 10 seconds of reading will inform someone that they have never made a machinegun. the original design was for one but it was too poorly made for the swiss market and flopped. so they made them for the US market in semi automatic. but i guess these people just need one more excuse to vilify an inanimate object and misclassify a particular company that was driven out of business by name in legislation that is unconstitutional.

i could go on, but will stop for now. lets see where this discussion will lead.

i look forward to any one else's accounts of misinformation, incorrect statements, or outright lies in the media, with the primary focus on the local stations in our communities.

While I do agree, some media outlets specifically "pick" on certain topics, I think most of the time it comes down to keeping viewers watching. Everyone of the people that saw the teaser for that story and knew a Tec 9 wasn't a submachine gun watched all the commercials to see the news story and shout at the TV, and all the anti-gunners watched because they were scared that some people are actually running around with machineguns.

Having been in the media field (and joyously leaving) for 10 years has made me realize that all that "unbiased reporting" stuff they drilled into us in school means very little when it comes to news companies trying to make money. The higher the ratings (reach & frequency) they can earn, by either pissing off their viewers so much they keep watching in order to gripe about the bias, or by embracing other viewers such that those viewers also watch, the more money they can make in sales.

Many times, it just simply doesn't go so deep as the true views of the reporter or outlet.

It gets even better when they show a picture of something that is obviously not a Tec-9 or a Kel-tec Sub2K, but they still call them those. Its just like them and their "pit bull" stories. Darn near any dog bite is called a "pit bull attack".

Oh yes, they definitely play to majoritarian biases and viewpoints.

You know, there was a time (a hundred years ago or so) when newspapers were openly biased toward certain viewpoints... many were owned by political parties or organizations. People knew to expect a little bias with their news, and to take stories on certain topics from certain news outlets with a grain of salt. However, over the past century or so, there has come to be this mythical ideal of the unbiased reporter, which is something that has never and will never exist.

I encourage everybody to recognize the biases in different news outlets, and to look at several sources for your news. Personally, I never watch any TV news anymore. There is just way too much BS and fluff. I get all my news online.

Most journalists now days are overworked because of lay-offs and cutbacks. That makes them covering more stories in the same amount of time (or less). A lot of what they report is just what they hear from the 'authorities' or the photojournalist shooting the cover footage. They don't have time to check google or wikipedia. If the cops say 'submachine gun' they say it.

Of course, it could be that they are just lazy, or have an agenda.
