It is my understanding that open-bolt designs were intended to lessen the possibility of a round "cooking off" in the chamber. Open bolt guns tend to run cooler, I believe.

Correct. Its since been found to be not correct.
I shot my m-16 over a thousand rounds over a few hours and never had a round cook off then it was time to call a cease fire.
One could have fried some bacon on the barrel.

True, but the idea did hang on for some time. It seems that the MAC-10 also fired from an open bolt.

Yes, the MAC-10 does fire from an open bolt as does the M11/9. Some of the older guns that were also open bolt: STEn, MP40, BAR, MG34, MG42. Some of the modern guns that are still open bolt: M60, M240, M249.

Had a guy last year shooting a couple lanes away at H&H who had a full auto Tommy....was really loud and all the smoke from ripping thru mag after mag made it impossible for me to shoot. I should have been mad but all I wanted to do was shoot it too lol, it was awesome. I bet your daughter will remember that forever :)
