Either one will kill a deer and a pig. It all comes down to which one you like, ammo supply & cost and which name of the cartridge floats off your tongue better. 6.8 SPC II is built to perform from shorter barrels and is a good suppressed round, even at full loads. 6.5 G was designed to have better long range performance/accuracy from 18"+ barrels. If you're reloading, you do have heavy .277 bullets for the .270 Win to choose from for experimentation but lot's of hogs are falling dead to lighter bullets.

I run 6.8 90gr federal gold dot ammo out of a Wilson 16” barrel and was at 2850 if I recall correctly. That stuff is the ticket for pigs and short barrels

This is the xm68gd fyi

that's good ammo, i bought a bunch of it when PSA closed it out for 7.99 a box. i've got 100gr accubonds, 110gr s&b and hornady, some hornady 100gr VMax, and some fusions. buying AE 90gr TNT now, pushing 3000 Fps and 1800 ft/pounds. the 6.8 was developed for short barrels, it's my favorite caliber, the texicans use it shooting pigs, most are firing 120gn SST's

So if you’re not running suppressed, 6.5 Grendel is probably the way to go, especially if you also plan to ding steel at 500 yards?

couldn't say, i've never owned a grendal. the 6.8 fills the bill for everything i can envision. lots of folks at the 6.8 forum deer hunt with the 12.5" SBR, which is what the OP was asking about...SBR guns.
