Damn shame, but his status as a veteran is not relevant...

Officer: "Sir, I see you are illegally carrying 30 round magazines in the State of New York. I'm going to have to place you under arrest."
Veteran: "But officer, I'm a decorated combat veteran."
Officer: "Oh, well. In that case, have a nice day.".

30 round magazines have been highly restricted in New York since 1994 and it isn't new news. Hope he finds his way out of this jam but he put himself in it.

The fact that he is a vet is somewhat relevant because it really shows how ridiculous the law is.

A combat vet with a 30 round mag is the equivalent of catching a carpenter with a hammer.

Maybe in showing how ridiculous the law is....I'll grant you that.

I don't get your carpenter analogy...all combat vets walk around trying to sell 30 round magazines in a state that outlawed them almost 20 years ago?

He chose to live in a state that has highly restrictive firearms laws.
He chose to be in possession of LEO/Military marked mags, which aren't grandfathered.
He chose to attempt to sell them, illegaly.
He chose to admit possession of them to a police officer during a random stop.

The way I see it, he was trying to cash in on the buying frenzy post-Newtown and got busted. Cold.

Being a "combat vet" does not make one above the law, and it does not make one smart and beyond reproach. The law may be stupid, but you don't have to make it easy for them to pin the law on you.

I will give him credit in that it doesn't appear that HE is the one playing the veteran card...he admitted he got busted fair and square...but others are on his behalf and it's distasteful. If I was him I'd be asking people to STFU.

But if this had been a big name media person, he/she would not have been charged or the charges would have been dismissed.

That's the really relevant point here, the more equal. If you've got enough money, related to the right family, got the right job, etc. you might likely walk or just get probation at worst when regular people go to prison.
"Just us" in America, how much can you afford and how much do you deserve.
