I think a lot of people just romanticize the idea of "doomsday" because of watching too much crap on TV. For some reason they think they'll be the exception to the rule for whatever bad is happening in the world. This nut job, I'd be willing to bet fantasizes about the Mad Max series of flicks, or something similar like similarly themed video games with his homemade armor and all. It's my personal belief, that history is a better predictor of the future than Sci-Fi ever will be. At least when it comes to predicting social or political trends and the outcomes that seems to naturally follow. Or it could be the boy just came from the shallow end of the gene pool.
