Thanks for mentioning Fung's and Tokyo Sushi. I've never heard of Fung's, but have put it on my Urbanspoon wishlist. I've heard of Tokyo Sushi, but have never been there. I've never tried sea urchin, but have always wanted to. Do you know how it's served there? I love sushi in forms of nigiri and, better yet, sashimi, but can't stand any one of the 20 or so different California-esque type rolls I've tried. I just don't like the cream cheese, avocado and all the other crap rolled up with it. I don't mind sticky rice, I'd prefer none (which is why I go with sashimi when available), and I don't mind seaweed, I'm just after the meat.

I was in Cozumel this past Thursday and tried conch for the first time ever. It was really good, but not as tender as I had hoped.

This is a really great thread subject, Brandi, thanks for starting it. I wish I had some suggestions, but all of the "odd" food I've had was always out of state. Is there any place in the OKC metro that not only serves escargot, but actually serves delicious, sweet, and tender (not bland and mushy) escargot?

Tokyo is authentic Japanese. I recommend their nigiri over their [insert US city name here] rolls. Their cold smoked salmon nigiri, albacore tuna, and yellow tail is almost always excellent. Their traditional non-sushi dishes are also really good.

Another Chinese place that has a B menu is Chow's Kitchen on May. Golden phoenix on Classen near 23rd st is also a place most never heard of, yet is always packed. Vietnamese restaurant that has a 6 page menu book full of dishes you've probably never heard off. They serve everything from roast duck, crispy roasted pork, pho, to some really questionable things that I haven't mustered enough courage to try yet.

If you're into guatemalan food, Cafe Antigua and Cafe Kacao on Classen are both excellent. Central American food is like Mexican without all the grease, with fresher ingredients and uses more fruit in their breakfast dishes.

frog legs, unfortunately, I have yet to find a place in OK that serves any of these.

Dude, your hangin in the wrong hood. My crib has lots of frog legs.

I think it depends on what is funky to you. I know some of the stuff I eat, a lot of people think I'm nuts (depending on how old you are, you might like the same stuff).

These are somewhat normal foods to me that some might find weird or funky:

Liverwurst, Blood and Tongue, Head Cheese: I really love Ingrids on these. These deli cuts are pretty typical in Deli's up north. Little hard to find down here. My favorite is blood and tongue. It has a smokey flavor that reminds me of smoked Gouda.

Bahn Mi: Imagine if Subway originated in Viet Nam. Basically a Vietnamese sammich with heavy french inspiration. Make sure you get it with fois gras, otherwise its just a sub.

Bahn Cuon: Basically rice noodle roll (sheet not actual rice grains) filled with pork, mushrooms etc. I love it topped with some fried sweet potato. Must eat with fish sauce and pepper sauce. My favorite place is over by Lang's Bakery.

I'll tip my hat to Tokyo. Can't go wrong with any sushi, nigri or sashimi.

Most of my other tastes I have to have shipped to me. Quahog and steamer clams, mussels, scallops, blood sausage, haggis, frog legs, gator, rattlesnake, jellied eel, kidney pie... unfortunately, I have yet to find a place in OK that serves any of these.

Fung's Kitchen has breaded and peppered frog legs. For gator tail, various mussels and clams, and sometimes turtle, I recommend Cafe De Brasil near McNellies. They're a Brazillian restaurant. Really good food and may be just what you're looking for if you want the oddball stuff like gator, ect. Their Sunday brunch is awesome.

Los Comales on Agnew down by the stockyards is a fantastic taqueria with lots of interesting choices. Plus they have Coke made with sugar. Everything I've tried there has been well prepared. I recently mustered the courage to try the barbacoa, which was fantastic.

They serve awesome mexican tacos and tongue, intestine, spicy pork, beef, chicken, carnitas, and it's pretty cheap too right there by Memorial and santa fe I believe.

Tokyo has been on my list of must-visits for some time now, but only because I enjoy good sushi every now and then. After the recommendations here which opened my eyes to some of their more unique offerings, it's been bumped up.

I have been to either Chow's or Golden Phoenix a few years ago as I was told whichever place it was happened to be one of the top dogs for authentic food. I wish I remembered what I had, but I'm sure I've liked it as I don't remember ever having an Asian dish that I didn't like, minus the trendy sushi rolls.

I've heard of Kacao and maybe Cafe Antigua, but they've both been added to my Urbanspoon wishlist. While it lacks a few Urbanspoon points in comparison to Cafe Antigua and Cafe Kacao, Zarate's in Edmond is a pretty decent Southern/Latin American restaurant we visit. There are Tex-Mex options as well if somebody in your party isn't adventurous enough to try one of the South American or Caribbean dishes. Might not be as popular as the two you mentioned, but at least worth a try if you've never been.
