Very True. All in the Family & Sanford and Son are really funny though.
I've wondered about the same thing. The best I can figure is that it is a combination of our puritanical heritage, and the fact that it has been a century and a half since a war was fought on this country's soil. The U.S. was the only combatant in WWII that didn't have war brought to its citizens' doorsteps, and we are the only nation which survived with its culture of militarism and nationalism intact.
I'll never forget the time when my Uncle had to secretly drive way up north on the Andrews Highway just to watch Deep Throat which is now acknowledged universaly as a priceless work of art.
