I'd be surprised to find a modern vehicle that doesn't have a plastic fuel tank. They're cheaper, lighter, don't rust, and are easily formed to fit the available space.

My 82 bronco had a plastic fuel tank covered by a thin steel skid plate. I buried it in quick sand once and got some small rocks between the skid plate and the tank. Over the years, they wore a hole in the tank so had to remove the skid plate, get the bb sized rocks out and put screws with silicone on them to seal the leak.
Only on certain vehicles. Mine were not affected on the Tacoma.

They do carry a heck of a load around the mountains though.
Those bumper-pulls aren't as heavy as you'd expect.
7800 lbs dry with no propane tanks, no water, no load.
