Flying with Firearms

Good day all

I’m not sure if this is the correct forum if not my apologies. I’m going to be flying to georgia this summer for about 8 days and I want to bring some handguns so I can carry. I bought a hard sided case with pull apart foam. I’m flying southwest and according to the TSA and southwest website I can carry ammunition in the same case as the firearm as long as it’s packaged. I plan on just buying a box of 50 rounds and throwing it in there. Will that be allowed and do airlines care if you pack multiple handguns in the same case? I couldn’t find anything online. I’m planning on bringing my Glock 43 my wife’s Glock 43 and a Glock 42. I want to put the three guns my unloaded mags and a box of ammunition in the same case. This should work right? Thanks all!

Sounds like you have it covered. When you check in just declare your gun. Make sure you have a lock to put on the gun case. Shouldn't be a problem.

All of that sounds fine. Just make sure the case is locked and placed inside your checked luggage, request a firearms declaration form at the ticket counter when you check the bag(s), fill it out and place it on top of the locked case inside your luggage.

I'd recommend waiting 10 minutes in the ticket counter lobby, just in case TSA has to open your bag to inspect something. If so they'll have you come to the counter and provide your key, but only if absolutely necessary. You should be present when they inspect the case (again, if necessary).

when flying with multiple guns in the same case do you have to fill out multiple declarations for the unloaded firearms or just one?

I have run into no issues flying with multiple firearms in the same case as long as the case meets the airlines/TSA requirements. Locks should not be TSA locks. For ammo, it can be in the factory ammo box or the plastic ones used by reloaders. I use the plastic ones and have cut my foam to hold everything secure. I also velcro it to the inside of my suitcase so it doesnt bounce around and mess up my other organization in transit.

For OKC, I suggest adding an extra 45min to how early you normally arrive in case theyre training someone and break down all the steps. Flying out of Denver, I add 90min because you have to wait for a security officer to escort you to a special xray machine before you can go to your gate.

Ive only had to fill out one declaration for each case, not for each firearm.

My brother-in-law had an issue with TSA they told him he had to have a lock on each side of the case because it could be opened at the corner. Might be safe and use two locks

Just one for each locked case, regardless of the number of firearms in a single case.

That's not the legal requirement, but it's good common sense, especially if there's any flex to the case which a single lock might not prevent removal of a firearm.
