The blasting creates a porous surface which holds gun oil very very well (so well it does not feel oily and does not rub off). The oil is what gives it the grey patina. Without the oil the stainless looks almost white. anyway....... Oiled Stainless = double corrosion resistant.
Yup. And "oiled" is the key word. You ought to see a side by side comparison of unpolished and polished but otherwise identical samples in a salt fog corrosion test. The difference is quite dramatic.
