My son just turned 5 and he's a wild and crazy guy. Lots of energy and aggressive (too much so IMO for his age).

I figure learning martial arts would be a good outlet for all that energy and maybe provide him with an increased level of self discipline.

...And I know squat about the martial arts.

Is he of an age to start learning it? If so what style would be appropriate (he's tall for his age 95th percentile, strong and lanky) and where would one recommend he go to start?

I'm not from OKC so I don't know the schools, but getting in to a reputable school would be great for your son. Or any child physically capable and mentally able to understand when folks speak to them. A good martial arts school that focuses on little ones is really an extension of a day care in a lot of ways. A good instructor will make the classes really fun for the kids, it's fun for the instructor too! The kids will learn a lot and get great benefits from it. To some folks it sounds odd to teach an agressive child to "kick butt" but there is a great deal of structure in a good school that teaches the kids discipline as you have mentioned. Good luck. He'll have a lot of fun.

Idk about OKC but in Edmond the only guy Id go to is Ty Gay out of Redline Gracie Jiu Jitsu. VERY Legit kids program "Gracie Bullyproof" IMO its WAY easier for a young child to learn grappling concepts than any stand up. Ive never met a kid that didnt like to wrestle around with dad or brothers. If you can come check it out 10 free days! Tell him Phil sent ya!

Ty is legit. Also OKCDT Judo at memorial/eastern. Mike Darter is a good dude, the have a great kids program that starts around 5-6 years old. Judo teachs mutual welfare and benefit, so it's your duty to care for your partner. Bjj is much the same. Plus OKCDT is non-profit, so it's cheaper than most MA schools.

American Top Team OKC NW 63rd and May. They are one of the best schools in the country for Jiu Jitsu, which from my experience as a martial artists and instructor for a number of years prior to joining the service, is the most practically applicable martial art! If you go there to ATT OKC you wont be disappointed.
