Thinking about giving my father in law a mosin for his birthday what's the law on buying a gun go a gift like that? He's a gun owner himself and is legally able to buy them.

Buying a gun as a gift is ok providing you have no knowledge of him being ineligible to receive a firearm. The law requires you to be the actual purchaser, and you are. You are buying it and then giving it to your father-in-law as a gift.

If he was giving you money to buy it for him, that would be a no-go.

If he lives out of state, you will have to transfer it to him through a licensed dealer.
