Hello! My dad and I drew out this year for salt plains wilderness area Nov 18-20. I haven’t been able to find any very recent reports on hunting there within the last 4-5 years. Any info would be helpful! Thanks!
Awesome, do you know how close the waterfowl area is to the wilderness area?Welcome aboard. I used to goose hunt the waterfowl area. The biggest shed I’ve ever found came from there. Used to have to shoo the deer out of the decoys to start picking them up. Lots of deer there.
Yessir it is a rifle hunt. Thank you for the insight! Yeah we are hoping for the rut to be going strong at that time! Thanks!I’ve drawn out there a handful of times, but never for the wilderness area even though I put in for it. I can’t speak to the wilderness area, but in the other zones I’ve hunted elevation was key. Assuming it’s a rifle hunt, I’d climb a cottonwood or a sand hill somewhere I could shoot 3-400 yards in all directions and just wait. I’ve had pretty good luck sitting up high and catching them going to food sources on private land. I think your first deer has to be a doe on that hunt- ask the refuge staff where to kill a doe quickly and they’ll probably point you in an effective direction. The rut should be full swing during your hunt and that place has a lot of deer, i bet yall have a blast. Good luck!
