Hello! My dad and I drew out this year for salt plains wilderness area Nov 18-20. I haven’t been able to find any very recent reports on hunting there within the last 4-5 years. Any info would be helpful! Thanks!

I’ve drawn out there a handful of times, but never for the wilderness area even though I put in for it. I can’t speak to the wilderness area, but in the other zones I’ve hunted elevation was key. Assuming it’s a rifle hunt, I’d climb a cottonwood or a sand hill somewhere I could shoot 3-400 yards in all directions and just wait. I’ve had pretty good luck sitting up high and catching them going to food sources on private land. I think your first deer has to be a doe on that hunt- ask the refuge staff where to kill a doe quickly and they’ll probably point you in an effective direction. The rut should be full swing during your hunt and that place has a lot of deer, i bet yall have a blast. Good luck!

Yessir it is a rifle hunt. Thank you for the insight! Yeah we are hoping for the rut to be going strong at that time! Thanks!

I should have added:

Take something to carry meat/carcass back in. I don’t think there is much vehicle access in that area. Refuge staff will pick them up if you can get them to a road, but I’d count on roads being few and far away.

Take something to rattle with. When I was there on those dates I had a very robust response to rattling.
