I would consider the ruger M77 compact. I bought one last year SS and laminate stock for $500 NIB in .243 and its light, handles well, short bolt throw and minimal recoil.

Folks thank you. I've got some time, so after deer season I'll beging to try out various guns. The most talked about caliber was .243 so I'll look at that closely. i was aso intrigued by the Swed M96. I happen to be a fan of antique military weapons and I reload. Again Thanks. If you can think of any others just add to the list and eventually I'll let you know what I choose and how it works. I'll also show some pictures of it and my new design for a gun mount for a wheelchair.

Academy has the Remington 700 bolt actions for under $400 (the 700, not the 710 or 770). They are nice, light, and have a crisp trigger. My dad picked up a 25-06 that was easy to handle and shot very well.

You'll want to get some cerakote on those pretty quick too. The paint finish is as durable as bare steel

Have you looked at the Thompson Center Venture? I believe they even make a short barrel version. I have one in 30-06 with a redfield scope and it ran me $730. Really light and super accurate. Maybe one in 243 or 308?
