What's the smallest/lightest .22 Semi-auto rifle - Like a Cricket for kids, but a semi-auto?

My apologies tynyphil,,,
You made a reasonable response to my inquiry.

I answered with "snark" which wasn't my intention at all.

Waaaaaaaaaay back in time I bought the original AR-7,,,
It was only $69.95 through the rifle-pistol club on McClellan AFB.

Let's just say it's reliability was iffy at best,,,
And it's accuracy wasn't even minute of tin can at 25 yards.

I'm not a fan of removable barrels on a rifle,,,
I'll never have faith that they "lock into place" the same way each time.

I bought a Winchester Wildcat with a threaded barrel. It's very lightweight because there is a lot of plastic. A lot. I was kind of suspicious of it but the price met my "I'll try anything for that" standard. It's fairly ugly too but I enjoy carrying it through the woods as a plinker although my suppressor makes it not well balanced. Also takes 10/22 mags. It's made in Turkey. Iron sights but not really good ones. Has a rail on top.

I'm looking for a .22 semi-auto rifle that would be small and lightweight enough,,,
For training a 6-7-8 year old child in Rimfire Steel Challenge.

I might already own the gun I'm inquiring about,,,
It's a Beretta NEOS Carbine I've had for years,,,
But if there's an alternative please tell me.

One gentleman told me to buy a used 10/22,,,
Cut the stock down to fit a small child,,,
Then mount a lightweight barrel.

That sounds feasible to me but if there's already something out there,,,
I would sure like to be made aware of it.

Any suggestions?

I'm fumbling in the dark here.

There might be other models but, it's hard to beat a ruger 10/22 for reliability and performance.

Hello jeeper90:

I'm aware that the Ruger 10-22 is probably the most common rifle at Steel Challenge matches,,,
I went to observe a few matches at the OKC Gun Club last year,,,
The 10/22 outnumbered all of the other rifles combined.

My particular situation wouldn't exclude a 10/22 for this young girl,,,
But it would need to have a somewhat short LOP,,,
And be as light in weight as possible.

Can anyone recommend a lightweight youth stock for a 10/22,,,
Possibly something in polymer with AR styling?

I'm Googling for answers to my questions,,,
But so far I'm getting zilch info.

Another vote for the Mossberg Plinkster (702). For a smaller shooter the Plinkster is short, lightweight and reliable. The one we have eats everything we have fed it.
