Don't get me wrong, if there had multiple attempts to rob my house I would defend my home too. But I certainly wouldn't go about it like he did. Dragged them into his basement and left them there for a day? Completely the wrong way to go about it. And besides they were kids, I bet just confronting them with a gun in hand would have been enough to scare them off it.
Crime should be a dangerous business. I expect the theives were dope addicts stealing to support their habit. I can only imagine the stories circulating among their friends after this incident. May have scared someone on to the straight and narrow.
