Hey guys, I've got a question that hopefully someone's life experience should help me answer.

Some genius backed into my girlfriend's car the other day in our dorm parking lot. It just scuffed up the rear fender of my gf's car, so it's completely drivable, but she's got the opportunity to get it into the shop on the 17th to get it fixed. Luckily, the other girl left a note.

Anyway, we're planning on driving to Starkville, MS on Friday to watch the Arkansas-MSU game. Here's the deal. If my gf puts her car in on Wednesday, her insurance says it'll cover a rental car. But what's difficult is that we're both 19 years old. I don't know if that's been clarified, or if they'll even still offer her a rental when her car is in the shop. It's foggy to me. Just because she's 19 doesn't mean she doesn't need transportation when her car is being fixed as a result of someone else's mistake.

I personally would LOVE for her to get a rental car, because hers only takes premium gas. That extra 25 cents a gallon really hurts over 500 miles. It'd be great if we could get something that gets 35 mpg on regular unleaded.

But here's my other question. If the other girl's insurance does provide a rental car, it's an 8 hour drive to Starkville, and I don't want my gf to have to drive the whole way. Any chance I'll be able to drive even though I'm 19? If not, we'll just wait to put her car in the shop afterwards and I'll have to pay more for gas.

If they owe her a rental car, it doesn't matter if she's 19 as long as she's a licensed driver. I see no reason why you can't drive it as well, with her permission and as long as you're licensed.

The only issue might be with the fact that you're gonna be driving a 1,000 miles. Just clear it with the rental people up front.

I used to run a body shop and if I remember correctly she would still need to be 21. Most insurance companies prefer you drop the car off on monday that way they won't have to pay rental over the weekend.

It really doesnt add up to that much more running premium. When I was going to college in Nashville, TN it only cost me $15 more in gas running premium driving from Nashville to Ponca City and that was in a truck thats gets 15mpg on a good day.

I don't think a rental agency will rent to you without being a certain age... I was thinking it was even higher than 21, but I'm not sure. And it may vary by company.

What is the minimum age I can rent a car with Hertz?

On most rentals the minimum age is 25 without an additional Age Differential Charge, and 21 with an additional Age Differential Charge. However, the minimum age for the Hertz Prestige Collection (HPC) and a few select Fun Collection (HFC) vehicles have a minimum age of 25 to rent.

I am an adjuster, so I will add some clarity to this.

The tort feasor owes you for loss of use of the damaged vehicle for the days it is in the shop. This is usually handled by providing you a rental car, but they can just as easily pay you for the cost of the rental for the set number of days. For example, if the rental is 34 per day, and the repair is 5 days, then they can cut you a check for $170. This will of course vary based on the rates the company has negotiated with the rental companies.

If your company owes you for rental, they coverage may apply even if they are not the ones handling the repair. Depending on the company and their coverage, you may be able to collect this rental payment even if you get a rental from the at-fault party carrier.

Finally, the rental company may or may not rent to someone who is 19, but none i know of will let you drive if she is renting the vehicle. I have had to book the rental for to a parent and the younger child drive the parents car - if this is agreeable with all parties. Again though - the insurer does not owe you the rental car itself, just the damages for the loss of use of the damaged vehicle.

PM me if you would like and let me know who the companies involved are. I don't have a vested interest in the deal, but I may be able to tell you more by knowing who you are dealing with.
