This is called "trench art" Soldiers used to sit in the trenches and carve pictures into their stocks. this was common with most every army.

I did'nt even think about it being trench art. As it looked to me as something recently added to the rifle? Isn't trench art usually crude, like carved with a dull screw driver? Too bad we dont know who's rifle this is.

google trench art. most is very crude but some is unbelievable. it could be recent who knows.
