I don't know that it starts all that slowly--the explanation of how the world got into the Handbasket to hell was what got me hooked. I'm about half-way through, and I'm definitely enjoying the novel. I started reading the online version linked above, but I'm actually listening to Audible's unabridged version; the narrative style of the book lends itself very well to the audiobook format.
