If you can stand listening to this guy, he actually does a good job of explaining why a Dyson isn't all it's cracked up to be. I'd spend my money on something besides a Dyson.
I can't speak to Dyson, but we picked up a Riccar 8900 series. I loathed the idea of spending that much money on a vacuum, but I have to say, after 7 or 8 years, it works just as well as it did the day we bought it. Over time, it's saved us money, plus is actually cleans much better than anything else I've seen.
My wife's grandmother had a Riccar from the late 70s or so. When she passed, it ended up with us. My wife took it into House of Vacuums, had the belt and filter replaced, and it is as good as new. I'm pretty sure it could suck the curtains off the walls if you weren't careful.
I think it is a good gift if she has asked for one before - like REALLY asked not like "oh I'd like a dyson" If not - I can see a long future of no more guns for you....
we have three golden retrievers and the hair is ridiculous. We've tried a few multiple high quality vacuums and even had the house built with a central vac, but the only one that has made the slightest difference is the Dyson DC25 Animal. We have the older version of that one that doesn't have the ball, but it's a world of difference. Had it for for a few years now and Dyson has been pretty good about repairs too. The other ones broke fairly quickly and would require to go over the same spot multiple times to get the hair out, the Dyson smokes it. Get the hair out of the corners, out of carpet fringe, off the side of couches (important because dogs love rubbing against them), pretty much everything. Works great in the car too.
Before we had it, we had pretty much given up on wearing dark colors. Get it, you won't regret it.
More importantly, I never thought i'd be writing such a positive review of a vacuum on a shooting forum....
My wife bought a Dyson and loved that it got the carpet clean, but hated everything else about it. I wound up using it more than she did because she didn't want to use it. It developed an electrical short betewwn the top and bottom. Now the motor cuts out when you run it back & forth.
We bought a $69 Hoover to replace it and now my wife will vaccum again!
I still need to get the Dyson fixed if anyone knows a place around Tulsa that repairs them. It works great as a car vaccum.
Yeah, that was my first lesson in the first year of my marriage...No appliances for b-days or x-mas. What's up with that? I'm perfectly happy to get tools for either.
After paying for way too many high-dollar vacuums over the years I found that the $39 one at Wally World works better and has lasted longer than any of those.
.
We have a Dyson - we both love it, I've beaten the crap out of it, much to my wife's dismay. I filled it completely full of wet dry-wall mud that got all over some carpet a few years ago. Cleaned it out and still works like a charm.
We got ours back when they were still a new thing, maybe 6 or so years ago. The prices of today's Dyson's make me cringe when I think what we paid for ours, but still worth it.
I think there are a lot of choices that work as well and are cheaper than dyson. I don't know many people that have been happy with them. I have a couple commercial vacs that are better and cheaper.
