I fail to see how a non-union workplace would have any different outcome. That particular issue doesn't seem to deal with unions in particular, just a hierarchy in the workplace. I mean hell, it seems like working for someone else you're always going to get the crap end of the stick, but then I hear people complain about working for themselves, too, so I guess it's just the human condition.

My problem is that I dont work for the guys on day shift, they work for the same company I do. It's just the typical "I have been here longer than you so you need to work harder" attitude. I have worked at a lot of different places and I am used to the shift wars, but this place is by far the worst especially since 99% of the dayshift in the shop are born and raised locals who have known each other forever.

Im retired now. I worked in Union shops and non union shops. Ive worked jobs as skilled labor/tradesman and ive worked non skilled meaningless jobs.

Every place i worked, i worked to the best of my ability. If a company can find a better more reliable worker, good, ill move on. I never needed a union and i never liked working for bad companies.

At the end of each day, i showered and went to bed. If you have to work then work until you dont have to. Just dont try to solve the worlds problems on a 8hr shift, mind your biz, do your job and trudge on.

Have you activated the Bat signal?

Sounds like you need to make a call to OSHA and the State Labor board instead of complaining. I would suggest you have your facts documented.

What would calling OHSA be worth? Then I would be caught up in courts and more crap I don't want to deal with. Obviously, I don't mind working where I work and how I work. Do I think I deserve more from a company that's making money hand-over-fist? Hell yeah! Do I care enough to risk my job? Absolutely not. I come to work, I still do my job. I guess I'm to blame. I'm not trying to point fingers, just sayin' how it is.

Your life or that of another worker. Or you can choose to keep working in unsafe situations and hope for the best. I would think getting fired would be a better outcome than losing my life or watching someone else die on the job. Then again, most job injuries or related deaths occur because of employee stupidity or lack of awareness.

Well, the company I work for takes advantage of me as a worker every chance they get. I see how many dollars each order is worth, and I see how much we spend on purchasing. I do the hard labor, the people on top get the money. If I was a union worker, I know I would actually be able to ensure my rights like getting state mandated breaks, options of overtime and whatnot. I work in dangerous conditions without the proper safety equipment. I am constantly lied to when I bring up the possibility of a raise, while I see our sales staff gets hooked up with perk after perk for doing jack squat. There's not a single person at my job that I could switch positions with and not be able to perform their duties.

Businesses and corporations DO take advantage of workers, regardless of if you are wearing rose colored glasses or not. Do unions operate to try and make the best deal they can? Hell yeah. What's so wrong about that, ain't it the American Dream? Sounds to me like some of you want a business world where workers have absolutely no say in their own employment. That's kinda like....COMMUNISMS?!~?!?!

(Oh, and before anyone says "if your job sucks, quit!" it's just not always that easy. If your business is being attacked by the government, revolt. See?)
Whats a state mandated break? I been working 35 years and I don't think I ever had 1 of those.

I have seen the underperformers and every single night at work 2 crews have to pick up the slack of 4 crews because they all feel that because they have been in the union longer that they are better than most of the jobs that are assigned. I hate unions and everything they stand for, and I hate the fact that I am doing 3x the work just because others think they no longer have to work and can just sit there and collect a paycheck.
Better watch out! I once worked in a shop with a IAM (international association of machinists and aerospace workers) union.
I worked 1st shift and turned out 125 parts per shift with zero rejects.
The 2 slugs on 2nd and 3rd shift could only manage 25 per shift and 50% reject rate.
If it had been non-union they would have been fired.
Instead they threatened to fire me for doing too good of a job and making the others look bad.
So, since I could run every machine in the factory.
The boss had me make 25 parts each morning, then go operate a machine that a worker didn't show up for work.
The happiest day in my life was the day I got laid off and started my own business.
I will never ever work for a union shop again. All they do is breed laziness.

This is just me throwing this out there since I don't know too much, but it seems like in every situation where someone hates a union, they have a story about specific crappy people (that arguably could have been similarly crappy without a union).

Isn't blaming the unions for the actions of crappy people a bit like blaming the gun for the homicide instead of the shooter?

^ Exhibit A of why unions suck. Love first hand stories like that.
