He told a reporter in an interview that back in the day he figured nobody from Lubbock, Texas would ever hit it big.
Then he saw Buddy Holly driving down the street in a new convertible and the car was full of girls.
Mac Davis said to himself if Buddy can do it, so can I.

Mac didn’t write “Suspicious Minds”, but in addition to “In The Ghetto” he also wrote “A Little Less Conversation” which was a big hit for Elvis. (How cool would it be to be able to say you wrote hit songs for Elvis Presley?)
My mistake. His early work writing for Elvis Presley produced the hits "Memories", "In the Ghetto", "Don't Cry Daddy", and "A Little Less Conversation".
