Brett look at the Marathon TSAR, GSAR and JSAR before you get anything. These watches are made for specific branches of the US and Canadian military but you can find them on Ebay and also on Watchseek forums. Practically indestructible, with sapphire crstals and waterproof and shock proof. The Gsar is an automatic with tritium hands. The tsar and jsar are both quartz movements with the csar having tritium and the jsar having lumiglow hands. The Jsar is a huge watch. If you're in Owasso sometime give me a ring and I'll let you check them out. Prices will range from around $350(well used) to $800(new) depending on condition.

I'm a cheap/ durable watch fan.

When young, dumb and full of ...... Re enlistment bonus money, I blew $1400 on a Rolex Explorer II. Nice watch, but too fragile and heavy for daily thrashing. Years later, it still spends about 364 days per year in the safe. Hard to beat a $32 Timex Ironman. The straps last a year or two then break, then I go back to Walmart for another.

I am however, smitten by Resco watches http://rescoinstruments.com/ . Although maybe above the OP's price threshold, their 1st Generation Patriot watch, either in brushed Stainless or Cerekoted in black, sure is nice. I stumbled into them via a FB post from a friend and came dangerously close to buying a watch last month, as they were selling old stock to fund new plans.

Not too dumb...Rolex is one of the few watches that appreciates and your $1400 has tripled...
