I lock everything and everything, house and cars have alarms. Neighbors on both sides of me have been broke into because they are easier targets than us. That and we installed security lights around the house so if they want in a car they gotta do it lit up and there are too many easier targets in the neighborhood. Been lucky, so far...

Car stays in garage and there aint nothing in my truck worth having, LOL

I thought the same thing until one of my neighbors had her car broken into while in the garage. The thieves used the garage door opener from the truck in the driveway to open the garage door. I know from my bedroom, I can't hear my garage door open at night.

The thieves used the garage door opener from the truck in the driveway to open the garage door big mistake on their part. Also monitor on security camera beeps when motion is present, letting me know someone or something is outside. Neighbor has been letting dog out at three am and coming in my yard running around. gets a little annoying.

Had a rash of that in our hood. I keep mine unlocked. One night mine was opened and gym bag with sweaty clothes stolen. Neighboor had window bashed aand all sorts of change and little stuff.

I now keep my car pretty much empty but unlocked. I figure i'd rather them yank door handle to find it empty than break window. Then I still have a window to fix.

Since I started doing this other vehicles have been hit on my street. Maybe mine too but nothing to take and I didn't end up with a broken window.

My neighborhood too... Never leave a car out or the garage door open. If the front door is open the dog is always laying by the door watching outside. A 160lb bull-mastiff, no one comes in our front door!

Those who do knock on the door are always off the porch, 6 feet from the door by the time I go answer it.

Mike :)

All of our vehicles have alarms and its highly unusual for someone not to arm them on the way up the driveway. Ive probably forgot myself though more than a few times but dont remember ever missing anything. Have never been broken into yet anyways. The wife leaves her car unlocked here and there and I remember once someone came along and got all her change. I think it was just one of her own kids. My 15 yr old said that he knows most of the idiots around here who are trouble and he knows that if they see the red blinking lights on the cars dashes that they just go on down the road. Nice to have insider info.

When I'm home and not out on the road working Im usually always up late at night roaming around in and out of the garage where my shop-studio is working late on a project or maybe milling around outside for whatever reason- so I guess Im sort of the neighborhood watch in my section of the 'hood' or burb late at night. Actually its a residential area on the outskirts of a small town just outside the big town. I try to keep a watch on things without looking nosy or suspicious myself but nothing ever happens around here anyways. The most quiet place Ive ever lived in. Im definitely not the George Zimmerman of the neighborhood. I might have my pocket carry in my shorts or sweat pants pocket when outside late at night but I'll have my cell too and I'll call 911 first before I stop someone with force from doing something to someone elses property. Im an idiot but not a moron. My own property though I will gaurd it as I see fit and deal with things afterwards. The only thing that has happened around here in the 10 years I have been here was a few years ago right after graduation in town some kids came out and hit a bunch of mailboxes and tore some down. Except for those of us with maiboxes made out of brick.

20 years ago I moved from home in San Diego to San Francisco to go to school and when I first moved there I could only afford to live out in Oakland,CA in a pretty bad part of town. It wasnt much different than my 'hood' in San Diego- at night there would be alarms and sirens going off at all hours. Car alarms going off, nobody even pays any attention to them. Even the owners dont come outside for like 20 minutes to check it out. I had then and still have a big lifted Blazer 4x4 and while it never got stolen there it had been gone thru a few times by thieves no matter what time of day it was. I never kept anything of value in it anyways while I lived there, not even a stereo in it.

This is precisely why my opener is wired into the overhead light switch. I just turn it off at night. If they want in they are BREAKING in. I'll hear that...
