Yes, its the continuation of the 1887 designed for Smokeless.
And thats correct, 1901's were 10ga only...but I'd think the gauge would be less of an indicator of the actual design than the mechanics of it.

I've went threw a ton of shotguns, but only one has stuck around.... A single shot H&R topper 12ga. Cut to 20" threaded for Mossberg chokes.... have it, like it, never shoot it tho. Even have a 16" single shot 38 special adapter for it too.

One can buy a lever action 12 ga on sportsmansguide.com for around $329.00 I believe. It's not American made and some of them need a little "fine tuning" but most reviews are positive.
Just curious, why doesn't;t the OP want a hammer gun? I think a person has more control with them than the non-hammer ones. I just never learned to trust them without a hammer even as a kid.
