When I was crafty. :)
I took some 4x4's and 2x4's and 6's and built an A frame in my garage with the 4x4's going straight up to the ceiling pinching the 2x6 boards against the ceiling.
Some outrigger legs to keep it from tilting.
Ratcheting come along and some chain and I had an engine puller.

I did one decades before the garage built one and hoisted an entire 1978 bronco front end off the ground.
It had the 400" engine in it from an LTD. That was a lot of weight for a wood A frame but then i got on top of the A frame to prove to my buddy it was strong enough to pull an engine.

Another way if you have an attic in the garage and doing the pulling in the garage is to lay a 4x4 post over the runners in the garage ceiling.
I did that and poked a hole with a pencil through the sheetrock and lowered a cable I had fastened to the 4x4 and then made a loop in the cable and double clamped it.

Hang a come-a-long to the loop.

Couple buddies have done that in their attics.
It also works well for hoisting up deer or pigs at home to process them.
