I really only know what I've been told, M-Lok certainly looks easier to machine.
Robert at MidAmeric Armament tells me that keymod is definitely harder to machine. He currently makes some killer take down kits with either style of quick detach, so that's coming from a guy who actually does it for a living.

I spoke to the guys at Midwest Industries the other day and they confirmed that M-Lok is outselling K-mod by a considerable margin.....and they sell a LOT of hand guards.
The K-mod "look" is more suited for the back of a walling hanging clock or picture frame.
