I think that Hussein Obama will use Mexico to promote a gun ban more thanhe has in the past.

On the other hand, it may bring "Fast and Furious" back in the limelight again.

As mentioned in the blog in that article and discussed countless times before, the cartel with their billions of dollars is not relying upon a small trickle of haphazard firearms being smuggled into Mexico from the U.S., but are buying them by crates stacked in pallets from other countries.

Full auto, no less.

No registry exists and no authority exists to create one - so no. But they could at least provide all the info on the 2000 or so weapons sold knowingly to cartel suppliers by "Fast and Furious".
This whole issue is a red herring - the military grade, fully automatic weapons that the cartels use come from either the Mexican Army itself or from international arms dealers (mostly Chinese and Russian). The US "gun supply" story is mostly kept alive by those who want to use it domestically in the US as a way to pressure gun owners. On the pistol side, I did see a report that there are a significant number of US original manufacture handguns in Mexico but that is not what is fueling the drug wars, nor the challenge to Mexico's Federal government's authority.

And cartels won't be bringing a pistol to a machine gun fight.

I believe that Mexico is pushing for GC in the United States specifically to make it easier for the cartels to encroach on US soil.

This could be a scary possibility cause we all know how darn crooked Mexico's government & police are anyway. To say the cartel has influence over them sadly isn't a far stretch of the imagination.

Agreed. It's not the Mexican authority that poses a problem, it's the well armed cartels. I believe it wouldn't seem improbable to see the cartels attempt to sieze a small border town as an example of the chaos they could actually bring.

The weapons that are being made an example of(automatic weapons) are already registered on the proper ATF forms. Don't hear those making it across the border because of the cost. The cartels or the local small gang thugs wouldn't pay those type of pricing. Bulk purchasing is how they do by dealers from foreign countries and warlords that have siezed foriegn governments that liquidate munition stockpiles.
