So if you keep some throw line, climbing rope, carabiners and a harness in your truck along with your monkey fist, does that classify the monkey fist as a tool and not a weapon? 
That reminds me of an interesting (anecdotal) story of a court case where a judge ruled a fight between two young guys, mutual combat. One of the attorneys tried to make an issue of one of the guys carrying a Buck 110 Lock blade folder on his belt, it wasn’t used in the fight. Judge said not a weapon, common tool carried/used by work men.
Found a field expedient “slung shot” by the walking trail, I use at Black Gold park in Glenpool. Tuesday morning picked up discarded shorts, muscle t-shirt, phone charger and a sock knotted tightly at the open end, with a rock the size of a tennis ball inside. Been seeing bums sleeping in the shade some mornings for the last couple months. Most of them with carts and backpacks full of crap, looks like. Out burgalerizing, stealing what’s not locked up, nailed down all night. Wore to a frazzle by dawn, I guess.
