Not moving anytime soon with the housing market being unfavorable to buyers right now, but I think I'm done with being "in the city" and would eventually like at least a 1 acre property on the far outskirts of the metro.

I'm looking for some experiences on things that can be "sobering" when going from being in the city to living out where it's more open.

I know there's a few obvious ones like:
  • May not have city water and sewer, so then you've got septic and well water
  • May not have trash pickup service? (I think this concern is not as common though)
  • Less/no high speed internet options
  • May lack paved roads depending on the area.. could have a gravel or dirt driveway.
  • May need to upgrade to a riding mower
  • Longer trips to go to the store, more money spent on gas, increased wear on vehicles, etc.
  • Dealing with wild animals? I have guns and have no qualms about shooting coyotes or raccoons.

There are some oddball concerns I've thought about. Are these a concern?
  • Neighbors who shoot on their property and accidentally shoot towards your home?
  • Neighbors who regularly burn trash or rely heavily on fireplaces, and your house being downwind from them? (I've read stories of people whose houses were constantly bombarded by smoke)
  • Random people riding ATVs or dirt bikes on your property, despite putting up property markers? (I assume a simple fence would solve this)
  • Noise from pump jacks?

You may need to subscribe to a "service" for fire department protection... that is, pay an annual fee for service vs. paying maybe several hundred dollars per truck per hour if you have a fire.

If you have to call law enforcement to report a crime either in progress or not, it may take a while for them to arrive. Sometimes there is only one deputy on duty to cover our entire county.

I believe I've also seen billboards advertising helicoper ambulance service down near the Pauls Valley area. Good point regarding emergency services out in the sticks.

Ok, so your moving to the suburbs!! Not much different than city life LOL.

I get what you mean but that is not the case.

My goal is not to live next to some compressor station 30 minutes north of Atoka, if that's what it truly means to be "in the country".

However, I think it would be advantageous to be outside of the turnpike loop, since as OKC grows it will quickly fill up the space to that point. Just this weekend I rode through Harrah to see what it was like, and there's some acreages out there that looked alright. So something along these lines.

I've been a country boy damn near my entire life. Sorry, but I kinda giggled when you mentioned a half an acre and every item on your list has never been an issue for me.

I don't know how you city boys do it, I really don't. There's no way in hell I would wanna live almost an arms length away from a total stranger like you guys do in the city. I like my wide open space. My closest neighbor is at least 1/4 mile away.

Rethink your move. A half an acre on the outskirts of the city isn't really country living IMHO.

But...that's just me. :anyone:
