Mysterious monolith found in remote part of Utah

Those structures were developed by wind and rain erosion and are called hoodoo's. We went on a nature trail with a guide at Lake Powell UT and that is what the guide said they are called.

Actually, those "structures" are called "Toadstools." That is even the name on the signboard at the parking area. The Hoodoos that you refer to are largely in the Bryce Canyon area.

Toadstools are a column of sandstone that has been eroded but has a harder rock perched on top.



Hoodoos don't necessarily have a caprock.

I saw a story yesterday where a similar monolith has been found in two other places. One was a mountaintop in California and another in Romania.

I think I need to get in touch with family or friends in the Panhandle and have them keep an eye on the top of Black Mesa. I might would have to take a road trip.
