+1 for labs, a Bad lab isnt a bad lab at all its a bad owner. I haven't ever met a lab who wouldn't be your best friend in the world after 30 seconds of showing them attention.

lots of people are suggesting labs and golden retreivers, but how much do they shed?

My three Labs are fur factories. They shed pretty much year-round, but the early to mid spring is the worst when they blow their winter coats. At that time, I have to brush them daily, and I end up with a cantaloupe-sized mound of fur each. And they still shed the same day.

But as others have said, by and large they're lovable goofballs who will be your BFF if you let them. Not a good guard dog trait, but... ;)

You know, I read stuff like this all the time, and I must have just had bad luck, but I've known 4 lab owners, 1 down the street, my neighbor, my sister and a good friend, and those dogs are all bat s#!^ crazy.

yes if you neglect them, they are that way... my wife plays with them not even 30 minutes a day and they come in the house and just sleep and hang out on their beds, my wife has trained them (and because they are motivated by food they are easy to train) to come inside and stay on their beds, we can go to sleep and they will just stay there never getting off their beds even for 8 hours straight...

labs do shed, but goldens shed a ton more.... trust me labs are worth it if you don't believe me i should have you talk with my wife, she says everyday i don't know how people cannot own labs, i get happy just thinking about how happy they are to see me when i come home from work...

+1 for GSD, Im also going to say Pitbull... I know, I know.. There is bound to be a ton of PB haters on here. I have had a few. Along with them and my GSD's no other dog will be allowed in my house. The fact is you will not find a more loyal dog than a Pitbull. Both of my kids were raised with one.. .I was raised with one.... Not a single problem... ever.... Dont listen to all the hype, they are great dogs.. Im more worried about labs, dobi's, GSD than I ever was about a Pitbull.

I'd get a boxer. They are wonderful dogs. I have a 7 month old that gives mine hell every day. She pulls and tugs on him, trys to steal his toys and his food when mommy and daddy aren't looking, lays on him, anything you can think of. He just takes it like its nothing. He sleeps next to the crib or if one of us are holding her he sleeps at our feet. My parents have one and my niece lives with them and its the same story.

The first year they need alot of exercise (30min-1 hr) each day but after that he just entertains himself. I still go out and throw the ball for him every day but 10 minutes is enough for him.

They are incredibly smart dogs too. He knows the yard boundaries, won't go into the neighbors yard or street unless given permission.

Definetely give a boxer some long consideration.....you won't be disappointed.
