Calling all military rifle gurus….

My FIL gave this gun to my son. All he knew was that this gun was WW2 Japanese gun, given to him from his father (my wife’s grandfather).

Can anybody ID ? I don’t even know what caliber this thing takes. Any info much appreciated. Would love to fire off some rounds or even deer hunt with it.

See pics.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

The chrysanthemum being intact denotes a war trophy/war bring back. If the chrysanthemum is ground off it indicates it was brought into the US after the war and not a battlefield pickup. It is in 7.7X58mm commonly known as 7.7 Japanese.

Pretty sure you have a Type 38 identified by the two flash-holes, I believe the Type 99 only has one. Likely chambered in 6.5 Jap (6.5X50) but these rifles were often rechambered after the war so a chamber cast would be needed to verify caliber. I’ll dig mine out from the back of my if need be but I’m 99% sure that’s correct.

Wow, intact mum. That doubles the value. 38 has a longer barrel 31” - instead of the 26” for the 99. Cool rifle.
