That is not a type 99 it doesn't have the anti aircraft wings nor the holes to mount them

Not all type 99's had AA sights. Some had fixed pattern , early , mid and short pattern adjustable lacked AA wings. Depends on the series and or arsenal. etc etc.

You have a nice collectible! That Mum is a doozy!
Find one of the military weapons forums and post it there. You should get a lot of info on what looks to me like a very desirable Japanese rifle.

Not a 99.
The markings on the receiver indicate the model.
It is a Type 30 model of 1897 chambered in 6.5.

Thanks to all OSA contributors for the info on the Arisaka rifle.
It’s great to think that my grandson (8yr) will have a rifle previously owned by his great great grandfather. I thought about messing with him with some story about his Great Great Grand being a fierce Japanese Samurai warrior … who lost his sword but held onto his rifle … while fighting a Hun….alongside Mulan….

I was going to dig my Arisaka out of the safe to check on this new found information. Mine still has the mum intact as well but has been sporterized with a .300 Savage barrel added. The hand checkering of the stocks is not standard like seen on any rifle.
It's four rows back in the corner of the safe, so I'll try to get it out for pics tomorrow.

I wish I still had all my Japs. I had type Type 38, Type 38 carbine, Type 44 carbine that was a Chinese capture and converted to 7.62 x 39, and a Type 99. Also a Type 38 that someone had done a great job sportizing and not a Bubba job.

Well I will try to list what Japanese long guns I still have. Type 30 hook safety long rifle ( of course). Type 38 carbine , I call this a battlefield pick up, has intact mum , action cover and repro cleaning rod , bore is very good , I believe these were chrome lined ? A training rifle based on a M-1888 commission rifle , then a Type I , two barreled actions , one in Japanese 6.5mm and the other in 257 Roberts , with one set of woods , all done right. Two Type 30 bayonets , and then a as new Miroku 38 special revolver , type used by Japanese police from the 60's to the 80's.
