It probably also has a lot to do with how tight the chamber is to begin with. An old reamer that has worn down a bit and is on the tight side of spec could have problems vs a barrel that has a new reamer and may be a bit looser.
I have only shot brass through my ar's and especially with the 300 blackout everything I have is reloaded anyway. My 5.56 is a match grade barrel so I would rather not put steel through it anyway and I have never come across 300 blackout rounds in steel cases so I doubt I will have a problem there.
