I live in Stillwater and I'm attending OSU for an engineering degree. I'm not a kid - I'm 31 with a family of my own, so hopefully you'll believe that and know I'm serious.
Recently I've been tasked with drilling some holes for a study I'm now part of. The issue is that normal augers won't do it, and I haven't been able to find a pole truck or other deep auger for rent.

What I'm asking you for:

A place that rents an auger tool that will do 16"-18" holes about 18' to 20' deep.
If you know of something close to those capabilities, please post up.
Hopefully there is one for rent between Tulsa and OKC, but at this point we'd probably go farther to get it.

Now for the part that really sucks. It's a really freaking cool project - and I cannot talk about it (patent issues). So yeah - I'm asking for help with little to no reward (like pictures and such). Sorry.

Thanks.

Now there is an idea. I'll call them tomorrow. I'll bet that we wear out our welcome with as many holes as we need, but it can't hurt to ask. Thanks!

Keep the ideas coming if you have them - we may get told no....

Ask your local electric utility, we help with projects all the time.

Most utilities dont go nearly that deep. They will have the bit but no extension or rock teeth if needed. ETA ( we dont really deal with rural power maybe they do it all the time ? I wouldent see why )

Not knowing you from adam I'm going to have to say it... Those holes are very dangerous to be around and unless filled properly can remain that way.

NOW that has been said.... Renting the truck is going to be expensive if your only wanting to dig one hole your going to be better off just paying a company to dig it for you. There are lots of companies out there that all they do is holes and are insured. should be like 300-500 bucks if everything goes smoothly

What about a 'pot holer' or a hydro vac machine. thats what we use in the plant for stuff like that. starting bores for a larger drill to come in so they are below any piping that radar didnt pick up and even digging trenches. deepest i have seen them go is about 12 feet but they did that no problem

As for the safety, we know. Provisions have been made to apply a cap so long as they are open. They will be filled with the experimental stuff, then backfilled.

Pot holer? Never heard of that. I'll have to look into it. Will it cut a fairly nice round and consistent hole?

I don't know of any utilities that will do a hole that deep or diameter. Got a contractor like Pier Drillers in OKC. Looks like they do very large jobs but may have the smaller rigs to fill your needs. I am in the construction equipment rental business and know of no company that rents what you need. Possibly Kerby Smith Machinery would have something but doubt it. BTW, any thing you find to rent you better know how to operate it and prepare to spend big $$$$$. If you could shorten the depth of hole your options may open up quite a bit.

Our resident geologist here at work suggests water well drilling companies. He also says that pier and foundation companies might have a contractor they hire to do their drilling. Also local streets departments would probably have a drilling company they use.
