Norelco SKS Type 56 Handguard

I just picked up Chinese SKS in pretty funky shape. I took it apart so I can get all of the cosmo out of it. The only thing I'm having trouble with is getting the and guard piece of the gas tube. Anyone here know the trick to it?

Don't try to remove the wooden hand guard from the gas tube unless there is a really good reason to do so. It can be a mess and is seldom necessary. Go here for a lot of info on SKS's http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php .

I want to remove it so I can refinish it. There is also some rust I need to remove.

Google SKS handguard removal and you'll get stuff like this - http://www.atigunstocks.com/img/cms/instructions/sks1100.pdf . I'm sure you've seen the pins that hold the wooden part on. If I recall, and I may be wrong, there is a right and wrong direction to drive them out.
