why congress is freaking out over the sequester. Congress might have fly commercial!

the head of the Air Force today warned that the spending cuts that will go into effect March 1 could cause the military to eliminate those lovely miljet flights that lawmakers enjoy.

Members of Congress adore flying on Air Force jets, particularly for overseas trips — there are no security lines, check-in is a breeze, the service couldn’t be better, and it’s business class-only.

But if the government-wide cuts aren’t thwarted and the military has to pinch pennies, lawmakers might have to kiss those perks goodbye, Air Force Secretary Michael Donley told the crowd at the Air Force Association’s winter conference in Orlando, Fla., we’re told.

Not to worry folks, Dear Leaders salary has been exempted from any cuts.

President Obama has been busy blaming Republicans for the sequester even though he insisted on the option being included in the bill he signed. It’s unlikely however that Republicans were the ones to insert the presidential pay exemption into the sequester rules:

President Barack Obama won’t have to worry about his paycheck if the spending sequestration included in the Budget Control Act that he signed into law in 2011 begins taking effect this Friday.

A report published last month by the Congressional Research Service — “Budget Sequestration and Selected Program Exemptions and Special Rules” — identifies certain programs that are exempt from sequestration and lays out special rules that govern the sequestration of others.

Section 255 of the Budget Control Act includes “Compensation for the President” as one of those exemptions (Page 19)

Some of the things that should be cut,

Republican Sen. Tom Coburn has also identified several programs at the Pentagon he'd set aside, including a video called "grill sergeants" in which the instructors show their favorite recipes; money for a plan to send a space ship to another solar system; funds to find advancements in beef jerky from France; and $6 billion on questionable research, including what lessons about democracy and decision-making could be learned -- from fish.

Also the government has about $45 billion in unspent funds that could be used.
