Web bulletin boards are just a technological evolution of the newsgroups, BBS, what have you. "Social" media and/or networks are a term used by journalists. Also, Twitter is a hopped up PERL script that turned texts into blog posts and is somehow worth billions now. That is why I hate them. 
Not to mention Twitter encourages brevity, and the destruction of the English language.
But back to SMS's original post, I think it's actually a great idea to overwhelm the original intent of a hashtag to put to "better" use.
