I have respect for LEOs doing a hard job, but this was not some gang banger punk not complying. It was a little old man of no threat to that officer. Anyway you look at it the officer used excessive force.

Hate to say it, but there are people who should not have guns. Or knives, automobiles, or anything else that can be misused. Though supporting legislation to deny people their 2A rights while illegally selling firearms to other criminals is particularly wicked.
He made a radio call for backup assistance, send another officer. He should have waited the few minutes for the other officer, probably a supervisor, to arrive and get him dialed down.
It seems to me that slamming people to the ground is a very dangerous thing, and it's a cowardly thing to do when someone is old and weak, or female. This body slam stuff needs to stop, except in the most egregious circumstances.
