My daughter had a seminar in Detroit a few years ago. At the hotel, which was downtown, they were told they would guarantee safe passage to the seminar and back. Everyone was told that if they left the hotel to go bar hopping, dancing... etc. they "were on their own".

Just got back from there for work
And yeah...it's that bad.

Without going into it I'll just add that rental car insurance is a must for that city and upon turning the keys back in the attendant wasn't really surprised, just resigned.
