I'm ok with dropping 6 day for mail, but I think they are very wise to capitalize on the uptick in package and small parcel delivery over the last 3 years and keep delivery 6 days for it.

I used to ship thousands of small parcels every year and the USPS is without a doubt the most cost effective and reliable way to do it. All of those small business owners who rely on that service are rejoicing with me right now that they will not make a change to that service.

And I agree about getting Congress out of their hair... the USPS has to survive under rules that no other business or government agency has to... it's amazing they've survived this long in that realm.

The biggest reason why they are in the hole according to the article.

But the key culprit for the Postal Service's woes has been a 2006 congressional mandate, under which it has to pre-fund healthcare benefits for future retirees.

It used to be that a job with the post office was a great deal. I've known, and heard of, people who made six figures working overtime and picking up routes, etc.

This is just one more death knell of the mourning bells of our country.

Who needs bills and sales circulars on Saturday?

It amazes me when people complain about how much it cost to send a letter. If you don't like the price, send an email or pay electronically. But think about it, you can mail a letter 3000 miles for $.45, that's a friggin bargain.
