I'll get some pics up later, but my 870 is my workhorse. Bone stock, gouges all in the wood. It's been dropped in a lake, used as a boat paddle, and dragged to more duck blinds than I can remember. It just keeps on eating shells and dropping ducks.

Good looking .45 ya got there Pete. Did somebody do the frontstrap checkering or is that one of those Wilson wrap around things?

It's one of the Wilson wrap arounds, but I haven't had a single complaint about it yet.

My "workhorse" is an old No4 Mk1 rifle. I use it for "pest control" on the farm. It has dropped everything from feral hogs to rabid skunks. It may not be pretty or fancy but it gets the job done. When I do carry a sidearm it is usually my Taurus 357. ( top )

This is my S&W Model 19-4 .357. I bought it in pristine condition from Kaz (retired Tulsa PD Rangemaster/S&W armorer). I competed with this gun for 2 IDPA seasons in 05 and part of 06. It's been rebuilt twice, with a new cylinder on the 2nd rebuild. The Performance Center gunplumber told me after the last rebuild to stop shooting it in competition because they wouldn't be able to rebuild it again.

The finish wear is in spite of lining my Ready Tactical kydex holster with moleskin (which I also replaced twice). This gun did double duty as my carry gun to and from range trips and matches. All I did was swap out to carry ammo.

This is actually the 2nd cylinder. The hammer bob, cylinder chamfer and trigger work were all done by me, by hand. I also radiused and polished the trigger and swapped out the cylinder latch to the new model. The DA pull weight is actually almost 9#, but smooth as glass. It will light off anything I stuff in it. I had Curtis Higgins of S&H Arms mill off the integral front sight and cut a keyway so I could install a pin on sight. Here it wears a round top Hi-Viz front sight which I flattened into a square post with a file. The rear sight and other front sight (not shown) are Meprolight night sights. I would swap the front to the night sight if I was going to an indoor match such as the S&W Indoor Nationals or the Arkansas Winter Classic.

The wear at the front of the frame below the yoke and the bottom of the trigger guard is where the barrel of my C-2 Centurion flashlight would rub during a low light/no light reload (reloading a revolver in pitch black with a flashlight in your support hand is an interesting proposition). The uglier than sin homemade grips (by me) were shaved and shaped specifically for my hand. They're intentionally textured rough and tacky for competition work and the left side is shaved paper thin for speedloader clearance. This caused a significant callus and some calcum deposits at the 2nd thumb knuckle from riding recoil.

I won the 2005 IDPA National Championships in Stock Service Revolver Division with this gun, along with a couple of State and Regional titles. Of more significance to me, I beat Jerry Miculek on 4 of the 16 Nationals stages and all of the low light/no light stages at two different indoor matches. That's my speedloader gun against his moon clip gun.

This gun is uglier than homemade porn, but for obvious reasons, it holds great sentimental value. I will never sell it.

Is that "workhorse" enough?

I thought so. I had one on my Springer back when I toted one.

Mine was pretty simple. I had most of the bells and whistles (beavertail, slotted hammer, extended mag button, Videcki trigger, ambi safety, S&A flat MSH with funnel and Kings 3 dots) but never a full length GR and I kept all the guts factory spec. After all...it was my duty weapon. I was also running Chip's 8 round Shooting Star mags with SHAW bumps. Those things ran better than the Wilson 47Ds.

Sometimes, I think about owning another 1911...just for kicks and giggles.

But never for a carry gun.
