I have sent my kids to both over the years. Lived in NC for three years. They have county rather than community schools. They bused kids all over everywhere and it was a general mess kids where second at best and teachers first. So we sucked it up and did private school which was great.

When we came back to OK we started in a larger school (5a) equivalent. FunnelF system a bunch grade schools funnel middle schools then usually one HS. Thus, you have to live in the right grade school area. After a year of that we moved back "home". Basically, we knew the teachers and community supported the school. Our kids would be taught what was right by good people you would see Sunday morning. Our kids would get to play sports and participate in what they wanted. If they wanted to go to college they would be prepared or they want to get a job or go farm they would be ready (most do this).

It just depends on what lifestyle you want. All schools have their issues. Check some small schools and ask folks they will tell you how good the school is. State numbers are misleading because they do not take into account what kids want to do with their life. I know a whole bunch of oilfield guys making big old piles of money and have. Never set foot on a college campus. It's hard to convince a kid who wants to farm that a high ACT score is important.

I sent 2 of my boys to private Christian school for a few years. Wish i could have kept them there.
One thing to think of is that many kids clept out of first year of college so you actually get a head start on college and that saves you some serious money. So look at it as an investment.
Like some said earlier, some private or private Christian schools take just about anyone that was rejected from other schools, some do not.
Just remember, no transportation, some have limited sports and rediculous amounts of fund raisers even if you aren't in sports.

We send my son to private school here in OKC. I was not sold on the idea when we first looked into schools. That was 4 years ago. I have been very impressed. I will say though that it is so dadgum expensive. It's like buying a new car every year!

My .02 based on 3 kids that attended public schools.

It depends on the kid, then of course the school.

There are students that will perform at a high level no matter what the environment is, and there are some that need to be motivated. I have 2 of the first, and 1 of the second, in hind site we should have sent him to private school to help him a bit. He has turned out alright though so I'm not sure it hurt him any.

I went to private school my entire life and it was fine. Some of the stuff was stupid in high school, but it was just me being a stupid kid. I still hung out with my public school friends. One thing about going to a private school was the abundance of scholarship oppurtunities that my public school friends were never made aware of or offered even though they had better GPAs than me and were better in their respective extracurriculars.

My wife went to CHA (Christian Heritage Academy). She received a good education. If you are a Baptist or don't mind your children getting a Baptist-centric education, it would be a good choice.

I attended public school in Oklahoma, however my ex wife attended private school in California. My ex wife and her brother and sister all went to private school K-12. From about 6th grade up it was separate school for boys and girls. My ex wife did have a slight culture shock when she started college from going to an all girls school. The first few weeks of college she was amazed at how people dressed and acted during class since she was going to co-ed classes now. My personal opinion and the one I keep for my kids is if you can get into a decent public school do that. My son goes to a charter school and loves it. If you live in an area where public schools are not an option go with a co-ed school.

Looking at Summit Christian in BA. Wife was able to be very involved in elementry, but going into middle school this year. The middle school doesn't exactly pull from the best areas in BA. The class sizes are alarming as well since some have almost forty yes forty kids in them. We did not plan well enough this year with having a newborn a month agoto be able to enroll her this year, but might for the second semester or next year.

We also have some work to do on the budget to make sure we will be able to send our other daughter next year as well. I want to invest in my kids just want to do it right.
