Just re texture the entire ceiling you can texture over the paint. I am assuming the texture is hand troweled? (SKIP TROWEL) I can probably talk you through it. I own remodeling business we do this often. If you need to I can text you

If it's popcorn texture, use a spray bottle with water. Then use a flat blade to scrape it off. If it's a knock down texture skim coat it and reapply another knock down texture.

Put a knockdown finish on the entire ceiling. It's so easy, I did it once and it looked fantastic! Buy the tools at HF and you simply spray a thick texture on the ceiling and use a drywall tool to smooth it out. Probably a cost of around 50-$60.00 total. Son-in-law did a hand texture and afterward he seen what I'd done and he wished that he'd done knockdown. It is quick.

Texture is technique.
Too rough/heavy= sand, skim, redo. Work it until it matches.

Latex paint, because of its rubbery nature won't really sand. You're on the right track about doing what's called a skim coat. But if you want the patch to be invisible, you will have to skim coat the entire ceiling, sand, then texture and paint. If you're not good with texture, you can get some PVA primer, thicken it with mud, then roll a orange peel texture on the whole ceiling, then paint. There is a whole lot to a good drywall job. Good drywall work is a thing of art, few people can appreciate it, except a pro.

I have done drywall and also found there is definitely an art to it. I have a tendency to inspect finish work while sitting in a room, shoddy work bugs me.
I met a fellow one time who could take sheetrock and make it look like crown molding. He was a bricklayer by trade. A real artist. He had trimmed his whole house in sheetrock and made it look like wood trim.

As conservative as I am, I will pay for sheetrock work. Every time I try, it's usually like socks on a rooster when I get done. And as a realtor, I've seen a lot of it from folks like me. I agree, it's artwork.
