Man, I kinda wish that I lived closer to you so I could befriend you and learn some of your machining knowledge. I've always liked the idea of being a machinist because I like to do things with my hands, but I went a completely different direction and became an office monkey. Plus, I think I'd enjoy it more as a hobby than as a vocation (like most things).
If you were nearby, I'd help you what I could on learning machine work. I don't claim to be a machinist but, I can usually get by. I have a friend close by that is a real good machinist and does gunsmithing work. I can usually get with him if I have any questions on how to machine something. Him and I went to Bartlesville today and bought some 4" aluminum round stock that was listed on Facebook. I don't have a need for it today but, when you can find metal at a good price its worth getting anymore.

To make it easier for you, here’s a close-up showing two mistakes. The hole around the dowel tore out while I was drilling it, so I had to use sawdust from the same piece of wood, mixed with wood glue. Unfortunately, the repair is darker than the wood. The other mistake is the horizontal divider, where I messed up the measurements not once but twice, as evidenced by the walnut insert repairs. I repeated the wider repair at the other end to balance it out, but still. Not a piece I’d sell for anything more than the cost of the wood, if I were putting it up for sale. So yes, a 20-footer ;)

Where are you sourcing the walnut?
I get walnut for my wood lathe from our yard. Walnut trees are pretty much self pruning during wind storms, so I cut it into lengths, remove the bark, and paint both ends with elmers glue. The glue slows down the drying process and helps prevent cracks as the wood dries.
If you learn to recognize what a walnut tree looks like, you might find some and get permission to cut one down.
Oklahoma has enough walnut that loggers are coming from out of state to harvest them.
20 years or so ago I took a bucket full of nuts to plant on one of the farms. Most came up and we have a small grove of them now that are about 10" in diameter. Never get big enough in my lifetime, but someone will have some $$$ one of these days when they mature.
