I need a roof and I'm in sort of the same boat. I'm considering doing it myself. I've put a few roof on in my life, and it ain't fun, but doable. My main concern is the neighbors and the fact that everyone is accustomed to a roof going on in about 12 hours. My plan was to do one face at a time, so it will take a little while.

The cost is crazy. My cost of shingles and supplies at retail is about $4400 as I recall. Quotes are well north of $20k. I know they've got insurance etc. but that's a decent chunk of money.

That is why they all drive 80,000 dollar trucks. Roofing companies make bank.
One of my litmus tests for contractors is looking at their truck. If they show up in a dingy white F150 single cab they instantly start off with more credibility than someone driving a bullcrap lifted bro-dozer. It's the same thing as looking at pretty casinos --- they didn't build them on winners.

In your momma’s bedroom.
Don’t know how it is now. But what I remember is some white dude showing up in a big new F350 and him being your buddy. Then a couple days later 2 or 3 beat up clunkers, one dragging an old trash trailer, and about a dozen Hispanic dudes piling out. They knock it out in a few hours and wait on your new buddy to show up to make sure everything is done and him collecting the money.

Had that happen to me. I specifically asked for the whole North side of the roof to be redecked and it was on the quote we agreed to. Came home from work (early) and they were already done and gone. I said to myself, ain't no way. Sure enough, climbed up in attic and there were fist size holes where the nailer blew through the old decking. Called up white brodozer driver and he never even sneezed. Just said they'll be back tomorrow to tear off and do what was supposed to be done. And they did, just blows my mind half a roof of shingles trashed after one night under the stars.

Well, if you have to do that very often it would definitely explain some of their overhead.
